Dr. John E. Clinton Scholarship for Artistic Excellence



Dr. John E. Clinton gave vision and leadership to the Oklahoma Youth Orchestras for over 20 years by providing a quality music education experience to hundreds of students. In his honor, the Oklahoma Youth Orchestras is pleased to offer one (1) college freshman majoring in the field of music (education, performance, composition, history, therapy, etc.) a one (1) year scholarship in the amount of $2,000 toward tuition and fees. The scholarship is non-renewable.



  • Student must have participated in the Oklahoma Youth Orchestras during the 2017-2018 season.
  • Student must enroll as a full-time freshman at an accredited university as a music major for the 2018-2019 academic year.
  • Student must have a 3.0 or higher grade point average at the time of application as stated on their recent transcript.
  • If awarded, student must write a thank you note upon receipt of funds and follow-up note at the end of the school year to scholarship fund donor(s) and committee members.
  • If awarded, student must serve as an “Alumni Ambassador” for Oklahoma Youth Orchestras responding to reasonable requests to help the organization spread its mission to other past students by providing testimonials and helping to contact former classmates as well as perform on alumni concerts as his/her schedule allows.


Application Process

  • Application must be submitted online and all required materials must be emailed to cmitchum@oyomusic.org by 11:59PM on May 25, 2018.
  • No more than two (2) page personal statement discussing the following two (2) topics (12 point font, double-spaced, 1″ margins):
    • A clear vision for your future plans in the music field and detail the reason(s) you are passionate about these goals. Be specific!
      • Example: How you plan to influence the lives of students as a music educator
      • Example: Why you find the field of music therapy so appealing
      • Example: Why becoming a performer is so important to the continuation of the art form
  • How your experience in Oklahoma Youth Orchestras or other organizations/school ensembles has inspired you to pursue a career in music or reinforced your desire to do so.
    • Example: Who are/were your music career role models
    • Example: How Oklahoma Youth Orchestras provided you a music-making experience you were not already receiving
    • Example: Why certain teachers played an important part on your decision to go to college and study music
  • Copy of most recent High School transcript.
  • Copy of College Acceptance Letter stating intended major
  • Two (2) letters of reference. One (1) must be from a current conductor or private teacher. This CANNOT be a staff member of Oklahoma Youth Orchestras. One (1) must be from a community member (other educators, clergy, coaches, etc.) who can speak to your work ethic, personality and leadership preferably outside of the music field.


All information provided by applicants will be held confidentially and will be made available only to members of the Scholarship Committee, Executive Director, Program Manager, and Board Chair. Applicants will be notified of approval/disapproval in July. Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the college/university and can be used toward tuition and fees.

Criteria for Awarding Scholarship

Application materials will be presented to the committee WITHOUT the student’s name to allow for a blind process. The committee will award one (1) scholarship based on commitment to the organization shown through participation history, personal narrative, properly completed information and attachments, and recommendation of references. Students with open balances on their accounts or unreturned rentals will not be eligible for the scholarship. All materials must be submitted electronically.
