Audition Dates & Location

Audition dates for the 2020-2021 season are planned for Friday – Sunday, May 22-24, 2020. We usually record auditions live at the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University, which is located at 2501 N Blackwelder Avenue, OKC, OK 73106, but this year we will send instructions on how to record your audition safely from home and send it into us instead.

Occasionally there are vacancies after our initial round of auditions and throughout the season. If you are interested in joining OKYO after the official audition dates please contact the Program Manager to see if there is a vacancy for you and to set up an audition.

Our programs cater to a wide range of age and skill levels. Our offerings for string instruments span young middle school students with a year or more of experience to the most advanced high school students. Wind, brass, percussion, and guitar students are generally of high school age, but advanced young students are encouraged to audition as well. There are no strict age requirements for membership in any of our ensembles, but age may be a factor in the placement process. Only students performing on instruments relevant to our programs are eligible for membership.

Important: All members of OKYO are required to participate in their school’s music program if one is available to them. OKYO is not a replacement for the daily practice and instruction provided by local music educators. An enrollment check will be performed to confirm your enrollment in your school’s music program unless special arrangements are made between the OKYO Program Manager and the director of the school ensemble. This policy does not apply to homeschool/online students, or to students whose schools do not offer a relevant music program.

Audition Process & Adjudication
All audition recordings can last no more than 5 minutes, so please plan your audition materials accordingly. All audition recordings will be reviewed by unbiased, third-party professional musicians and educators. Following this initial adjudication, our staff works together to make sure that each student is placed in the most appropriate ensemble according to their current skill level. For those auditioning for the first time things like age, length of time you have played your instrument, and whether or not you take private lessons may be considered. Current members auditioning again may also have their previous performance, behavior, and attendance considered.
Audition Requirements
Each instrument group has its own requirements. For instrument-specific requirements visit our Audition Requirements page.
Audition results will be sent in July after the review and placement process has been completed. Students may accept or decline their placement, and there is no financial obligation until you have officially enrolled. It is recommended that families consult the Season Calendar and Rehearsal Calendar, as rehearsals and performances are mandatory. Upon placement you will receive our OKYO Handbook which explains our policies on absences, behavior expectations, and other relevant information.
Registration closed on May 15 – email your inquiries to
