Audition Dates & Location

Primary auditions for the 2020-2021 season occurred in late May, 2020. We usually record auditions live at the Wanda L. Bass School of Music at Oklahoma City University, which is located at 2501 N Blackwelder Avenue, OKC, OK 73106, but now all auditions will be recorded from home.

After our primary auditions, we currently have vacancies in: violins, violas, guitar, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, French horn, and low brass, but all interested student instrumentalists are encouraged to submit a video. Please familiarize yourself with the audition requirements for your instrument, and when you are ready to submit your audition video, use the form below.
Our programs cater to a wide range of age and skill levels. Our offerings for string instruments span young middle school students with a year or more of experience to the most advanced high school students. Wind, brass, percussion, and guitar students are generally of high school age, but advanced young students are encouraged to audition as well. There are no strict age requirements for membership in any of our ensembles, but age may be a factor in the placement process. Only students performing on instruments relevant to our programs are eligible for membership.

Important: All members of OKYO are required to participate in their school’s music program if one is available to them. OKYO is not a replacement for the daily practice and instruction provided by local music educators. An enrollment check will be performed to confirm your enrollment in your school’s music program unless special arrangements are made between the OKYO Program Manager and the director of the school ensemble. This policy does not apply to homeschool/online students, or to students whose schools do not offer a relevant music program.

Submission and Placement Process
All audition videos may last no more than 5 minutes, so please plan your audition materials accordingly. Videos may be submitted through our Summer 2020 Auditions form anytime. Videos will be reviewed by our Artistic Staff, and students will be contacted by email with their audition results and next steps. Summer auditioning students are placed according to each students’ playing abilities as demonstrated in their audition as well as what vacancies remain after our primary Placement process. For those auditioning for the first time things like age, length of time you have played your instrument, and whether or not you take private lessons may be considered. Current members auditioning again may also have their previous performance, behavior, and attendance considered.
Audition Requirements
Each instrument group has its own requirements. For instrument-specific requirements visit our Audition Requirements page.
Audition results for the 2021-22 Season will be sent by email by August 1. Students may accept or decline their placement until August 14, and there is no financial obligation until you have officially enrolled. It is recommended that families consult the tentative Season Performances and Rehearsal Calendar, to be sure you are ready to commit to the time required. The OKYO Family Handbook explains our policies on absences, behavior expectations, and other relevant information, and a 2020-2121 Handbook Supplement addresses our health and safety protocols.

Students who submit an audition will be contacted via email with results and next steps.
